Ask any San Francisco 49ers fan about Brock Purdy and they will never stop singing his praises.
For them, the second-year player is doing a great job under center to lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance.
However, if you ask Cam Newton, he’ll be the first to tell you to get off the Brock Purdy hype train.
The former Carolina Panthers QB reiterated his opinion that Brock Purdy is not as transformative a quarterback as many would have him believe, sparking another round of conversation about the Iowa State product’s actual abilities.

He made it clear that he doesn’t think Purdy is a bad quarterback. However, he stressed that he has a clear definition of what a “game changer” is.“I never said Brock Purdy was trash.
What I said is that Brock Purdy is a game manager. It’s not hate, I think it’s just facts. But I still reserve the right to say this: To be labeled a game-changer, Brock Purdy has to be the best player on the offensive side of the ball.
This is not the case.”He went even further and gave the 24-year-old shooter a certain rank on the team:“If you really want to be honest, if you add the defensive talent and the offensive talent, Brock Purdy is the 10th best player on this team. Okay, okay.
Did he play a great game? YES. Did he act crazy? YES. Is he an attractive quarterback? YES. But he’s still the 10th best player on this team.”He also named Dak Prescott, Tua Tagovailoa and Jared Goff as game managers for their respective teams.
Is Cam Newton correct in his assessment of Purdy? Newton provided a clear rationale for his belief that Purdy is a game manager.
However, the statistics don’t lie when it comes to his performances. Brock Purdy led the NFL in touchdown percentage (7.0), yards gained per pass attempt (9.6), yards gained per pass completion (13.9) and QB rating (113.0).
He also finished his first full year as an NFL starter with 4,280 passing yards and 31 touchdowns. It’s also important to note that there are still question marks surrounding his game.
His terrible performance against the Baltimore Ravens gave the Kansas City Chiefs a blueprint for how to stop him in the Super Bowl.
