New England Patriots rookie corner back Isaiah Borden was released from a Wisconsin hospital and returned to Massachusetts with the team Sunday after he was seriously injured in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
Olden, 23, underwent a series of evaluations at the Aurora Bay Medical Center after he was taken off the field on a backboard in the fourth quarter of the game. He was held at the hospital for overnight observations.
“We thank the medical staff at Aurora Bay Medical Center for their overnight evaluations, as well as the Patriots and Packers medical staffs for their immediate on-field response and care in transporting Isaiah to a nearby hospital,” the Patriots said in a statement.
The Patriots did not disclose the nature of Bolden’s injury, but a source close to Bolden told ESPN’s Mike Reiss that the rookie suffered a concussion.
Bolden tweeted at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, about an hour after the Patriots shared the update that he was released from the hospital and would be traveling with the team.
“Appreciate the prayers, more excited to be back with the guys,” Bolden wrote on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.
After flying back to New England, the Patriots returned to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on charter buses shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday.
saturday night’s game against the Packers at Lambeau Field ended early after Bolden’s injury. First responders spent a significant amount of time immobilizing the Bolden, placing him on a stretcher and carting him off the field.
A spokesperson for the Patriots said Bolden had feeling in all his extremities when he was taken to the Aurora Bay Medical Center Saturday night.
Bolden, a seventh-round pick from Jackson State, appeared to collide with teammate Calvin Munson while attempting to make a hit on a pass completion to Green Bay’s Malik Heath.
As medical officials treated Bolden, both teams left their respective sidelines and got on the field, with some players getting on one knee.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Packers head coach Matt LaFleur were seen speaking on the field following the injury. The referee announced a short time later that the game was officially over.
Play was suspended with 10:29 left in the game. The Patriots were leading the Packers 21-17 when both teams mutually agreed to call off the remainder of the contest.
“I appreciated the way the league handled it,” Belichick said. “I think that was the right thing to do.”
Before Bolden’s injury, New England’s Mac Jones made his first appearance of the preseason before Bailey Zappe took over and rallied the Patriots to the lead.
Jones went 6 of 9 for 52 yards in three series, including an 18-yard touchdown drive after a Packers turnover. Jones didn’t play last week when the Patriots opened the preseason with a 20-9 loss to the Houston Texans
Zappe was 10 of 22 for 117 yards with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte. Zappe ended the third quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-2 play.
Green Bay’s Jordan Love threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to rookie second-round pick Jayden Reed on his third and final series of the game.
Love went 5 of 8 for 83 yards and also had two carries for 11 yards as he continues preparing for his first season as a starter following the trade of four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets.
Green Bay’s Kingsley Enagbare sacked Jones twice. His second sack resulted in a fumble that Enagbare recovered to set up the Packers’ second touchdown. Enagbare likely would start Green Bay’s Sept. 10 opener at Chicago if the Packers don’t have outside linebacker Rashan Gary, who is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament that ended his 2022 season.
Green Bay’s Anders Carlson kicked a 52-yard field goal with 1 second left in the first half. That represented a big boost for the rookie sixth-round pick from Auburn after he missed two extra-point attempts last week in a 36-19 victory at Cincinnati.
The Packers are planning for Carlson to take over for Mason Crosby, the franchise’s career-leading scorer. Crosby, who had been Green Bay’s kicker since 2007, remains a free agent.
Patriots wide receiver Tre Nixon left with a shoulder injury late in the second quarter.
The Patriots said due to the circumstances surrounding the abrupt and unexpected ending to Saturday night’s game, the joint practices that were scheduled with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday and Wednesday have been cancelled. The team said it will train in Foxborough this week and fly to Nashville on Thursday for Friday night’s game.
Titans coach Mike Vrabel said Sunday that the Patriots informed them Saturday night about the change in plans after Bolden’s injury.
Vrabel said the Titans wish Bolden well in his recovery and understands the Patriots’ decision to work by themselves this week. Vrabel said he would’ve loved to have his Titans practice against New England as previously scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Obviously understand that things come up, and we’re always able to adjust and adapt and we’ll practice and we’ll get work in and and we’ll see where we are here at the end of the week on Friday,” Vrabel said
