Over de afgelopen 24 uur is de naam van rechtsback Dest volop in de headlines in de hoofdstad van Catalonië.
This comes after word stemming from Eindhoven, where the 23-year-old is currently on loan with PSV, pointed towards Dest as having picked up a serious knee injury.
As much has since been confirmed, with the United States international’s continuity in the Netherlands beyond the summer having in turn been thrown firmly up in the air.
Dest, for his part, is enjoying a stellar season with PSV, with the widespread assumption, until yesterday, having been that the soon-to-be-crowned Eredivisie champions were therefore ready to activate the purchase option in his loan deal.
Amid suggestions that the former Ajax man could be sidelined until 2025, though, Barcelona’s incoming funds boost, all of a sudden, appeared far less certain.
Speaking to the media on Monday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of both Dest’s injury, and future with the club, were put to PSV president Marcel Brands.
First, regarding the former topic, Brands informed Studio Voetbal, as cited by Mundo Deportivo:
“It doesn’t look good. We still don’t know exactly how serious it is.”
Then came the news which the board back at Barcelona were no doubt pleading for – confirmation that PSV still intend to sign Dest outright:
“We were in negotiations with him and his agent last week. Yes, that is going in the right direction. We have to wait to see how or what is done, but we believe in Sergiño and I assume that he will be fine again. We would very much like him to continue at PSV.”
