PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers closed their 2024 rookie minicamp and are now ready to begin finalizing their 90-man roster and heading toward OTAs and mandatory minicamp. But before they shut the books on this year’s tryout class, they should ink three players to deals.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had a need at cornerback heading into rookie minicamp, and it appears they realized that and have added to their cornerback room.
Pittsburgh is signing cornerback Anthony Averett after he participated in their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
Averett didn’t play in the NFL in 2023. He last played in 2022 with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he suited up for seven games. From 2018-21, he played for the Baltimore Ravens, intercepting three passes in the 2021 season.
The Steelers acquired Donte Jackson from the Carolina Panthers in the trade that sent wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, but were still thin at the position. Cory Trice and Darius Rush were the only two other viable cornerbacks on the roster to play on the outside. Beanie Bishop was signed as an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia, but he will be a designated slot cornerback.
Averett will add quality depth to the room. he was drafted by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
