Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Jayson Tatum has agreed to terms with the Boston Celtics on a five-year contract extension that could be worth up to as much as $195 million
Tatum’s first-year salary, and ultimately total salary, will be dependent on him qualifying for the 30% of the salary cap max salary (often called the “Rose Rule”) or not. If Tatum qualifies, he will make $195,600,360 over five years.
Tatum can qualify for the 30% max by making an All-NBA team again (as he did in 2019-20), winning MVP or winning Defensive Player of the Year. Boston and Tatum may also have agreed to escalator language based on which All-NBA team Tatum is named to. This has become commonplace in recent years and was part of extension for both Pascal Siakam and Ben Simmons. It is unknown at this time if this is the case.
If Tatum doesn’t qualify for All-NBA, win MVP or win DPOY, his contract will be for 25% of the cap. The total value of that deal would be $163,000,300 over five years.
The Celtics drafted Jayson Tatum with the third pick of the 2017 NBA Draft. Boston acquired that pick from the Philadelphia 76ers, after trading the first overall pick, in a deal that also netted the Celtics the 14th pick in 2019, which became Romeo Langford.
In his first three seasons, Tatum has started in all 225 regular season games he has played, as well as all 45 playoff games. He has career averages of 17.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and just under a block per game.
In 2019-20, Tatum broke out as one of the best players in the NBA. He made his first All-Star team and was selected to the All-NBA Third Team. Tatum averaged 23.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He was also a terrific shooter, with 45/40/81 splits.
Boston now has Tatum signed for the next five seasons (at the time of this writing it is unknown if the deal contains a player option for the fifth year). Jaylen Brown, the number three overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, will start year-one of his four-year, near-max extension at the start of the 2020-21 season.
