The Detroit Lions reserve offensive line continues to take some serious hits. According to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, offensive tackle Connor Galvin suffered a torn MCL on Thursday night, and it will require season-ending surgery.
Galvin was rolled up on in the second half of the Lions’ preseason opener against the New York Giants. He couldn’t put any weight on his leg and was carted off.
His injury is now the second season-ender for the Lions backup offensive linemen. Earlier in training camp, Netane Muti suffered a season-ending shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve. Beyond that, rookie Christian Mahogany remains on the non-football illness list, Kevin Zeitler has missed some time, and Kayode Awosika has since returned after missing a couple of practice.
Galvin was in contention for one of Detroit’s offensive tackle jobs, battling the likes of Colby Sorsdal and Dan Skipper for a reserve role.
Unfortunately, Galvin wasn’t the lone injury from the preseason opener. According to coach Dan Campbell, defensive tackle David Bada suffered a potentially long-term achilles injury. Quarterback Hendon Hooker and receiver Antoine Green suffered concussions. Edge defender James Houston is dealing with a bone bruise in his knee, safety Morice Norris has a hamstring issue, and defensive end Nate Lynn has a shoulder injury (and was apparently carted off?).
That said, the Bada and Galvin injuries are the only injuries the Lions head coach categorized as “long-term,” although Campbell admitted it’s hard to know with concussions.
The Lions are back at practice on Sunday. We’ll likely know more about the rest of these injuries then.
