Despite a career-high four interceptions in the Atlanta Falcons’ 17-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, head coach Raheem Morris has reaffirmed his commitment to quarterback Kirk Cousins. Although the veteran quarterback’s performance has been criticized, especially with three of those interceptions coming in the second half—including a crucial pick-six—Morris insists that Cousins’ starting role is not in jeopardy.
Cousins, who threw for 245 yards but failed to score a touchdown in the game, acknowledged that his recent struggles with turnovers are a cause for concern. “There’s no entitlement in the NFL,” Cousins said after the game. “You just have to go earn it… I need to play at a level that justifies being out there.”
The loss to the Chargers marked the third consecutive defeat for the Falcons, with Cousins failing to throw any touchdowns and tossing six interceptions over the span of those three games. His performance is a troubling trend for Atlanta, where the offense has sputtered, and turnovers have been a growing issue.
Despite these struggles, Morris remains supportive of Cousins, though he hinted that continued poor performances could lead to a reassessment. “Kirk knows he has to play better,” Morris stated. “He’s been around long enough to know that.”
The Falcons also have rookie first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. waiting in the wings, raising questions about how long Cousins will retain the starting position if his turnover woes continue. However, for now, it seems Cousins’ job is safe—at least for the time being.
In addition to Cousins’ four interceptions, Chargers’ rookie cornerback Tarheeb Still made a significant impact, returning one of those picks 61 yards for a touchdown. Safety Marcus Maye, recently claimed off waivers by the Chargers, also grabbed an interception. The Falcons’ offense has struggled to find its rhythm, leading to their inability to break 20 points in each of their recent losses.
Cousins’ performance remains under close scrutiny, and as the Falcons try to right the ship, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on their veteran quarterback to improve his play moving forward.
