Charlotte, NC – In a move to bolster their quarterback depth, the Carolina Panthers have signed veteran quarterback Blaine Gabbert to a one-year deal. The free agent quarterback joins the Panthers after spending the 2023 season as a backup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 33-year-old Gabbert, who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, brings 12 years of experience to the Panthers’ quarterback room. Known for his leadership and steady presence in the locker room, Gabbert has played for several teams, including the Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, and most recently, the Buccaneers. Gabbert’s career numbers include 22 touchdowns and 24 interceptions, with a 57.2% completion rate.
Panthers Head Coach Frank Reich Addresses the Signing
At a press conference today, Panthers Head Coach Frank Reich discussed the decision to sign Gabbert, noting the value the veteran brings to the team both on and off the field.
“We’re excited to add Blaine to our roster,” Reich said. “His experience and football IQ are valuable assets, and he’s someone who has been through the ups and downs of the NFL. We believe his leadership will be beneficial as we continue to develop our quarterback room.”
While Gabbert is not expected to start, his presence will provide depth behind the Panthers’ projected starting quarterback, and help mentor the younger signal-callers on the roster.
“We have a young team, and bringing in a guy like Blaine is just another step in ensuring that we’re prepared at every position,” Reich added. “He’s been around, he’s seen it all, and he’ll be a great resource for our guys as we continue to build our team for the future.”
The Panthers will now focus on preparing Gabbert for his role as a seasoned backup, with hopes that his experience can provide stability should the team face injuries at quarterback this season.
