Romanian soprano Dorina Cheşei has died.

The Bucharest National Opera announced the news via social media and said, “With deep regret, we announce the passing of soprano Dorina Cheşei. We are parting with an exceptional voice and a soul dedicated to the lyrical art, a graduate of the Music Academy in Bucharest and formed under the guidance of the great masters Ludovic Spiess, Arta Florescu and Corneliu Fănă ,eanu. Since 1992, Chesei Dorina has been the soloist of the Bucharest National Opera, having a remarkable career, with collaborations on the most important stages in the country: Opera in Cluj, Timisoara, Brasov, Craiova, Galati, Constanta, and also abroad, in Sofia (Bulgaria). International tours have taken her talent to stages in Britain, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Japan, Netherlands, Belgium and Israel, being an ambassador of Romanian music. Her memory and contribution to the lyrical arts will forever remain in our hearts.”

Soprano Angela Gheorghiu also took to social media to mourn the loss stating, “With pain and great sadness I received the news of the disappearance of my good colleague Dorina Cheşei. May God rest my Dorina, who was full of joy and talent! Bravo for everything she gave to the public in Romania.”

Cheşei began her musical career by graduating from the Bucharest Academy of Music. In 1992 she became a soloist of the Bucharest National Opera, where she went on to perform numerous roles including Elisabetta in “Don Carlos,” Leonora in “Il Trovatore,” Musetta in “La Bohème,” Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni,” Despina in “Così fan tutte,” Elena in “Mephistopheles,” Micaela in “Carmen” and Antigone in “Oedipus.”

The soprano also performed at the Sofia Opera & Ballet House in Bulgaria and headlined tours in countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Spain, Belgium, and Israel.
