More transfer deadline day slop! L’Equipe’s Loic Tanzi is writing in L’Equipe’s transfer tracker that Tottenham Hotspur have made a €24m (£20m) bid for young Burnley and France U21 central defender Maxime Esteve. Burnley, the report says, is holding out for €30m (£25m).

First: WE MUST SIGN MAXIUMUM STEVE. I DEMAND IT.

Second: don’t watch a lot of Burnley? That’s okay, neither do I. But he’s young, and his FBref bars show him to be a young ball-playing defender, with good pass numbers and that’s probably something that makes him attractive in an Ange Postecoglou side that’s looking to play out from the back.

He also has two seasons of experience in a high-possession system, first under Vincent Kompany and now Scott Parker, at ages 21-22, and that speaks well to his ability and his potential.

Who knows if this is a thing or whether he’s just one of several options for Spurs as they continue to look for players on deadline day. But it’s an interesting one, for sure.

And just like that, my brief dreams of MAXIMUM STEVE are crushed, like so many empty eggshells. This is a tweet from a Burnley beat writer, who presumably would have the inside club scoop. Alas. Isn’t deadline day awesome?
