The region also faced somber news with the passing of Ann Houghton, a 73-year-old dedicated volunteer and avid hiker at Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Houghton, who had accumulated over 4,000 volunteer hours since 2004, was found deceased near Enloe Creek Trail in North Carolina after going missing for nearly a week. Her absence was reported when she missed her Saturday volunteer shift. A search, involving multiple local agencies, led to the discovery of her body near Smokemont Campground.
While the cause of death remains unreleased, no foul play is suspected. Houghton was a respected presence in the park community, having been nominated for the George and Helen Hartzog Award in 2022.
