Beaver Stadium’s $700 Million Renovation
Beaver Stadium, the home of Penn State’s football team, is undergoing a comprehensive $700 million renovation. The project aims to enhance the fan experience and modernize facilities.
The first phase involved the demolition of one stand earlier this year, with plans for the construction of the PAM Health Misitano Family Tower and the addition of 7,900 temporary bleacher seats on the suite level.
Ground-level improvements include expanded restrooms, additional concession stands, expanded concourses, and the introduction of a Welcome Center. The renovation is scheduled to span three off-seasons, with completion expected in 2027.
Budgetary Adjustments and Academic Program Changes
In response to a multimillion-dollar budget deficit announced in summer 2022, Penn State has made significant adjustments to its spending. Notably, the College of Engineering’s budget is projected to decrease by 12.4%, amounting to a $20 million reduction. Concurrently, the university has increased funding for certain programs, including a 26.6% boost to the nursing program.
However, this period has also seen substantial cuts to the graduate school, Millennium Scholars Program, and Schreyer Honors College, with reductions of 46.5%, 76.7%, and 54.1% respectively. These changes reflect the university’s efforts to align its resources with workforce needs and strategic priorities.
Campus Closures Amid Declining Enrollment
Facing declining enrollments, demographic shifts, and financial challenges, Penn State has announced plans to close several of its branch campuses. The seven largest campuses—Abington, Altoona, Behrend, Berks, Brandywine, Harrisburg, and Lehigh Valley—will remain operational.
An internal team is reviewing the other 12 campuses, with final decisions expected by spring commencement. These closures are influenced by the projected population declines in regions that primarily supply students to these campuses.
Leadership Transition: Marie Hardin’s Appointment
Quinnipiac University has appointed Marie Hardin, currently the dean of Penn State’s Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, as its 10th president. Hardin’s tenure at Penn State was marked by significant achievements, including the rebranding of the communications college and a substantial increase in its endowment. She will assume her new role at Quinnipiac University on July 1, 2025, succeeding Judy Olian.
