Ajax manager Francesco Farioli refused to panic after Sunday’s historic 3-0 home loss to NEC Nijmegen.

The loss, the first at home to NEC in club history, allowed PSV to close the gap to the league leaders to just one point. Just a few hours before their own team’s collapse, Ajax fans were celebrating Feyenoord going up 2-0 against PSV. A Feyenoord win could’ve made Ajax’s game the title decider.

“It’s a heavy loss. We can throw the statistics in the garbage because the result speaks for itself,” Farioli told ESPN following the home defeat.

The Italian also refused to point out what went wrong for his side against NEC. “There’s nothing to point at. I’d like to go home, review the game, analyse, and start again tomorrow morning with the players. We need to stay together and prepare ourselves for Wednesday’s game.”

With two games to go in the Eredivisie season, Ajax meet FC Groningen on Wednesday before closing out the season with a home game against FC Twente. The loss against NEC was Ajax’s third-straight negative results following a 4-0 loss to FC Utrecht and 1-1 draw at home to Sparta Rotterdam.

“Today, it wasn’t the beauty for us, but it’s part of the game and this is why we love the game. Nothing is ever easy, you always have to conquer every step and every meter you can gain, and now we have the opportunity to gain six more steps and we have to go for that.”

Today is a very sad day, but we secured the second spot. We wanted to give the supporters and ourselves a fantastic afternoon today, but unfortunately, we failed.”

The game against NEC was the fifth consecutive game in which Ajax conceded the first goal. When asked whether or not he intends to start this patiently, Farioli answered clearly: “There is no depth. When we face a team that comes here and they deliberately play lower, it costs a bit of patience and attention to unlock the situation.

Today, for example, we didn’t concede a counter, but we conceded a shot from 25 metres, which ended up being a goal.”
