As the North Carolina Tar Heels football program continues through fall camp, it received some bad news on Tuesday regarding its top wide receiver.
Head coach Mack Brown told reporters the NCAA rejected Devontez Walker’s waiver for immediate eligibility. Walker received the news this week, and he is now ineligible after transferring to the Tar Heels this offseason.
Walker began his career at NC Central but transferred to Kent State after the 2020 season was canceled. He spent two years at Kent State and had 58 catches for 921 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, earning first-team All-MAC honors.
“I knew something was wrong,” UNC WR coach Lonnie Galloway said via Adam Smith of Inside Carolina. “He leaned his head on my shoulder and started crying.”
Brown told reporters the school has appealed the decision by the NCAA.
Going into this year, Walker was expected to be Drake Maye’s top wide receiver target after the Tar Heels lost Josh Downs and Antoine Green. This will be a significant loss for North Carolina’s offense if the Tar Heels can’t get him eligible to play this season.
