Heartfelt messages are still pouring in from soccer players and soccer lovers after it was reported that former Orlando Pirates captain Papi Khomane passed away at the weekend.
His father, Johannes Yster Khomane confirmed to Orlando Pirates that both his wife and son died in a car accident.
“Orlando Pirates Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing away of former captain Papi Khomane. The Club was informed by his father and another Bucs legend, Yster Khomane who confirmed that both his son and his wife Mrs Rita Khomane were involved in a motor vehicle accident today,” the statement reads
Lebohang “Cheeseboy” Mokoena who joined Orland Pirates as a teen tells Drum that Papi is one of the reasons why he stayed in school. He says it was easy for them as young players at the time to listen when Papi spoke to them because he made it easy for them to listen to him.
“He was my senior and one of the people who welcomed us to the first team when we were promoted from development with the late Gift Leremi. He also comes from Pimville, Soweto so we were always in contact with him. He took care of Gift and me because we were young, and his father used to be our coach in the development team, so they were like our family. And his duties in the first team were to take care of us and push us both on and off the field.”
