BREAKING: Oklahoma WR Nic Anderson Enters Transfer Portal

November 29, 2024Nic Anderson, the star wide receiver for the Oklahoma Sooners, is expected to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported Thursday. The news comes as the Sooners look to navigate an offseason that is now expected to see a third key player depart via the transfer portal.

Anderson, a sophomore wide receiver from Katy, Texas, had a standout freshman season in 2023, setting a program record for the most touchdown catches by a freshman with 10. He was named a semifinalist for the prestigious Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award and earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors for his efforts.

In 2023, Anderson played in all 13 games, starting six, and finished the season with 798 yards on 31 receptions, averaging 21 yards per catch, which ranked fifth nationally. His highlight reel includes a game-winning touchdown catch in the thrilling 2023 Red River Rivalry against Texas, a play that will go down in Oklahoma football lore.

Despite his impressive freshman campaign, Anderson’s sophomore season in 2024 was marred by injury, limiting his impact on the field. He missed much of the 2024 season as part of a group of five wide receivers (including Andrel Anthony, Deion Burks, Jalil Farooq, and Jayden Gibson) who were sidelined for most, if not all, of the year.

Anderson’s departure leaves a significant hole in Oklahoma’s receiving corps. As one of the top receivers in the transfer portal, Anderson is likely to draw significant interest from programs across the country. His explosive ability, combined with his proven track record as a game-changer, makes him a highly sought-after commodity.

A Family Legacy at Oklahoma

Anderson’s decision to leave Oklahoma marks a turning point in his career, but it also reflects a family connection to the program. His brother, Rodney Anderson, was a star running back for the Sooners from 2015 to 2018 and now serves as the Sooner Sports Properties Manager of NIL Business Development. Rodney was a key figure in Oklahoma’s backfield during his tenure and earned All-Big 12 honors before entering the NFL.

Impact of Anderson’s Departure

With the departure of Anderson, the Sooners will have to look to their remaining wide receivers and incoming recruits to step up in 2025. The loss of a player who made such an immediate impact as a freshman leaves a significant gap for Coach Brent Venables and his staff to fill.

As of now, Anderson is expected to be one of the top names in the transfer portal, with his combination of size, speed, and playmaking ability making him an attractive option for many programs in need of a top-tier wide receiver.

Looking Ahead for OU Football

Anderson’s decision to enter the portal comes on the heels of other departures from the Sooners, adding to an already shifting roster for next season. Oklahoma is expected to continue to monitor the transfer portal closely, potentially adding key pieces as they look to strengthen their roster ahead of the 2025 season.

While the Sooners lose one of their most dynamic young players, the program remains focused on building for the future, with an eye toward competing at the highest level in the Big 12 and beyond. Fans will be watching closely to see where Anderson lands and how the Sooners regroup as they look to rebound from a season marked by injuries and roster changes.
