UNC, Hubert Davis agreed to contract extension through 2030
According to a copy of the contract, the deal was officially signed in early December — despite being initially agreed to on July 1, 2024.
Specifically, Davis and athletic director Bubba Cunningham signed it on Dec. 4, the same day as UNC’s 15-point home loss to Alabama.
As part of the agreement, Davis’ base salary jumps from $400,000 annually to $1.25 million, along with an increase in the 54-year-old’s supplemental income. Davis will earn $1.7 million in supplemental income this season with that figure growing by $100,000 annually through the life of the deal.
Should North Carolina move on from Davis before the end of the 2029-30 season, his buyout would only be for his base salary multiplied by the number of years remaining on his extension — not for any supplemental income.
The extension came on the heels of UNC’s superb 2023-24 season when Davis led the program to its first ACC regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in five years. For his efforts, Davis was named ACC Coach of the Year.
This is Davis’ second contract extension since succeeding Hall of Famer Roy Williams as coach in April 2021. Davis earned the first extension following his debut season when he led the Tar Heels past rival Duke in the Final Four (in the rivals’ only NCAA Tournament meeting) and to a 15-point halftime lead in the 2022 national championship game versus Kansas.
The following season, despite being the preseason No. 1 team in the country, UNC missed the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first top-ranked squad to miss the field entirely since the tournament expanded in 1985.
UNC is currently 18-11 and on the NCAA Tournament bubble. The Athletic’s latest bracket projection did not have the Tar Heels in the field of 68, but rather in the “First Four Out.”
WRAL first reported the news of Davis’ extension. Davis has a 96-42 overall record and is 54-23 in conference play.
Earlier Tuesday, UNC announced that it had hired longtime NBA agent Jim Tanner as the program’s first executive director and general manager.
