Latest Aston Villa injury news, expected return dates, suspensions
Aston Villa suffered a thumping 5-1 away defeat to Newcastle United in their Premier League opener but have completely turned around their fortunes since then.
Unai Emery‘s side sit in the lofty heights of fourth, with some tentatively tipping them to challenge for the title, though in order for that to have any legs, they’ll need to avoid injuries, especially during the busy festive period.
With that in mind, Football FanCast is here to keep you updated with the latest injury and suspension news ahead of their clash against Manchester City on Wednesday.
Villa have three injury concerns heading into Wednesday’s action.
Speaking in Tuesday’s press conference, Emery delivered an update on his squad’s fitness: “Every day is important how the players are recovering after the last match. I can’t know today how the players are going to be. We are going to meet tomorrow morning and decide.
“Some players are tired and have small pains, but I think tomorrow the players are going to be available and ready, because every player wants to play in matches like this.”
Ollie Watkins missed the 2-1 win against Legia Warszawa but was back for the trip to Bournemouth at the weekend. Boubacar Kamara has also returned after serving a one-game suspension.
Unfortunately, Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia are set to miss most of the season, if not all, while Bertrand Traore’s return date remains unknown.
Bertrand Traoré sustained an injury whilst on international duty with Burkino Faso in November and looks set to spend a period on the sidelines. |

The former Ajax and Chelsea winger has been absent from Villa’s matchday squad since their clash against Fulham on November 12th and hasn’t featured since October when he came on as a late substitute during a 3-1 victory against Luton Town.
The extent of his injury is unknown but perhaps it was a reoccurrence of a muscle tear he suffered earlier this season.
Tyrone Mings – knee
Tyrone Mings suffered a significant knee injury on the opening day of the season against Newcastle United, and Villa quickly confirmed that he would require surgery to resolve the issue.
The defender released a statement soon after the incident, saying: “I’ll now give everything off the pitch to come back even better, whilst supporting the team.
“The applause, the messages & the medical support I received on the day was really appreciated.”
In the immediate aftermath of the injury, The Guardian reported that the Villa captain would miss ‘between seven and nine months of action’ following surgery, meaning that he will likely miss the entire season.
Emi Buendia – knee
Aston Villa confirmed that Argentine midfielder Emi Buendia had suffered a ‘significant knee ligament injury’ in training a day before the season started.
He required surgery shortly after and posted to Instagram a month later to share his recovery progress with the fans, saying: “1 month since the operation. A month of many sensations, a month with pain, with a lot of effort, with hard days and others that were better, days of nostalgia for being back but being more patient than ever, days of great joy with the strength that my beautiful family, and above all a month with a lot of learning.
“With more desire to continue working to be back in the best way. Thank you very much to all the people of @avfcofficial for the support and daily love. And special thanks to my family, always close, always supporting and always giving affection and love. And to you @greengagew, Thiago and Gio, thank you for always being my driving force, I LOVE YOU.
“There is less left to return.”
However, as optimistic as his statement is, Emery was much more realistic when he revealed the extent of the injury, telling the BBC: “It’s a six, seven, or eight-month injury.”
Latest Aston Villa suspension news
The Villans have no suspensions heading into Wednesday’s home game against the treble winners Manchester City.
Although, John McGinn, Nicolo Zaniolo and Jhon Durán will have to tread carefully as they sit one booking away from a one-game ban.
The threshold for a ban within the first 19 games of the season is five yellow cards.
