Brock Purdy, quarterback and MVP favorite for the San Francisco 49ers, is making a paltry $870,000 in base salary this season.
He is part of his four-year, $3.7 million contract that he signed as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
He remembers, he lives in California and you might as well cut your salary in half to account for taxes.
As of October, Purdy stayed with an offensive lineman to save on rent.And even if the 49ers wanted to give Purdy a raise this season, they won’t be able to.
He could become the first 49es player to win NFL MVP in 30 years and give the franchise its sixth Lombardi Trophy with a win in Las Vegas in February, plus he would get the exact same base salary next year thanks to the deal of collective bargaining.
There has been a lot of talk in recent weeks about Mr. Irrelevant’s salary versus playing time, but sources have made things extremely clear to CBS Sports: 1) There is no way for the 49ers to work out a contract extension through 2025 at sooner and 2 ) Purdy will earn more than double his base salary on the football field alone by 2023, regardless of any additional marketing or endorsement deals.
Purdy’s four-year contract is a base contract. There is no incentive structure or large signing bonuses. Since 2011, any rookie drafted has had virtually no impact on contract negotiations, especially a rookie drafted with the last pick of the draft.
According to the ABC, “a drafted rookie’s contract may not be renegotiated, amended or modified in any way until the final regular season game of the player’s third year of contract.” So, if San Francisco wanted to pay him a premium contract sum as quickly as possible, the 49ers could do so no sooner than January 2025.
Interestingly, if the Niners had not selected Purdy and he had not been drafted, he could have negotiated a new contract in just three weeks.
Unfinished rookie agreements may only be renegotiated, amended or modified after the final regular season game of the second year of a player’s contract.
In terms of average annual value – the common metric many use to evaluate quarterback contracts – Joe Burrow tops all quarterbacks with $55 million. Purdy has an AAV of $934,253, which ranks him 85th among all quarterbacks.

But if he maintains this level, and if Dak Prescott breaks the bank this offseason like he should, then it’s fair to assume that Purdy will be one of the highest-paid players in NFL history come the summer of 2025. For now, he’ll have to make do with his rookie contract and the extra hundreds of thousands stashed away over the past year.
Purdy earned an extra $162,000 last year for playing in the NFC Championship Game, just like every other 49ers player as part of the league’s postseason salary program. If the Niners return to the conference title game this year, he would earn $174,000 (give or take a thousand dollars, depending on whether the Niners get a bye).
If San Francisco won the Super Bowl, Purdy would receive an additional $164,000 along with the rest of his teammates. If he loses in Las Vegas, he will receive an extra $89,000.And since he is an MVP candidate, there is no doubt that he would be a Pro Bowl quarterback.
A player on the winning team would receive $88,000 and a player on the losing team would receive $44,000. If the Niners make the Super Bowl, Purdy won’t be able to make the Pro Bowl, but will still receive the NFC team’s share depending on the outcome of the game.
Last year he also got paid…well…not paid for it. And this year he will do even more. Since the 2002 CBA, the NFL has paid “performance-based incentives” to hundreds of players each year.
This is an amount of money given to players by the league (using a formula) that rewards players who improve their contracts, in part, by comparing playing time to average salary. Purdy didn’t start until Week 14 last year and ended up playing about 34% of the 49ers’ snaps in the 2022 regular season.
Sources tell CBS Sports that Purdy earned $248,338.75 in performance-based pay for the 2022 season. To be clear, that’s all money on top of his base salary.
It is impossible to calculate Purdy’s performance-based compensation for 2023, although it is suspected that he will play 95% of the snaps this season due to other factors in the formula.
But personnel with salary cap backgrounds on five different NFL teams estimate he would get between $700,000 and $1 million in performance-based compensation for the 2023 season alone.
In short, Purdy earned $1.19 million just for his play in 2022. And for the 2023 season, with a Super Bowl win, he can add nearly $1.5 million to his $870,000 base salary. And yet… that’s not all.
The CBA also includes what’s called the NFLPA Group Licensing Program, a program that allows Purdy (and all players) to earn extra money. Although the formula by which the union distributes this money is secret, it relates to both Madden video game revenue and individual player sales.
The NFLPA identified Purdy in June as the best young player who would “further advance the sports franchise industry” in 2023. Today, Purdy is in the top 40 of all players when it comes to all licensed products.
A source with knowledge of typical payments told CBS Sports that a player with Purdy’s profile could earn a low six-figure amount with the program for the 2023 season. While the team can’t renegotiate Purdy’s contract at this time, there is a way to pay him a little more money.
Light.If Purdy hosts a community relations or sponsorship event for the team, the 49ers can pay Purdy up to $6,500 for each event, up to five events. And if he drove to these events himself, he could be reimbursed for mileage and even parking costs.
The NFL CBA states: “No monetary or non-cash consideration of any nature (e.g., suites, cars, loans, etc.) may be paid or promised to the player for any reason or, including, but not limited to: , the player’s performance in non-football related performances other than these five events.Finally, there are his recommendations off the field.
Purdy has contracts with Toyota and Alaska Airlines, and the terms of those contracts are not made public. If the 49ers continue to play like this, he will definitely be involved in more commercials and announcements in the future.
Purdy would become the cheapest quarterback to win NFL MVP since Kurt Warner did so after the 1999 season.
And the 49ers can continue to build around him because he’s at least 13 months away from his big payday. Purdy is engaged, splitting the rent and moving to one of the most expensive areas in the country. Every penny counts.
