Tommy Rees was just hired but that won’t matter if UCLA rumor is true
The Cleveland Browns could be next to be hit by a unique offseason coaching carousel.
In a short period of time, the following events occurred that gave tight ends coach Tommy Rees the opportunity to secure a head coaching job:
Boston College HC’s Jeff Hafley has accepted job with Green Bay Packers DCBill O’Brien, who was hired as OC by Ohio State University this offseason, has accepted the head coaching position at Boston College. UCLA HC’s Chip Kelly has accepted job as O’Brien’s successor at Ohio State
The final connection led to the Rees-UCLA rumors, but was also the most shocking of all. Simply put, a Big 10 head coach left his job to become the Big 10 offensive coordinator. There are many more details to this, but UCLA is now looking for a new head coach.
Rees appears:Tommy Rees, 31: The Los Angeles native has strong ties to UCLA, including his father Bill, who worked under Terry Donahue for 15 years, and his brother Danny, who played for the Bruins.
After serving three seasons as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame and one at Alabama, Rees recently took a job as tight ends coach and passing game specialist for the Cleveland Browns.
Then Bruin Report, behind a paywall, noticed that there was a lot of buzz about the connection/rumor between Rees and UCLA:
With Rees, as with the rest of the coaching carousel, it’s already interesting that an offensive coordinator for two major college programs has taken a coaching job in the NFL. It makes more sense for a major college program to hire him as a head coach given his roles at Alabama and Notre Dame.
The Crimson Tide, as the Browns would be in this case, had a new coach depart shortly after he took a position with them. Ryan Grubb was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies last year, followed Kallen De Boer to Alabama and took the OC job with the Seattle Seahawks a few weeks later.
For now, rumors are just rumors. On the other hand, the capture of O’Brien and Kelly were rumors that persisted for a while before becoming reality.
