Wakefield’s dire condition with brain cancer became public last week against the wishes of his family. He was 57 years old. The knuckleballer played 17 seasons with the Red Sox after beginning his career with the Pirates. The Philadelphia Phillies announced Thursday that first baseman Rhys Hoskins suffered a torn left ACL. “He will need to have surgery,” Phillies president Dave Dombrowski told reporters Friday. “I would be shocked if he doesn’t.
